For some, the Coronavirus pandemic is creating chaos and boredom from being stuck at home. (Believe me – I get that!!) But for others, it is inspiring creativity, family time and some form of homesteading. One of the biggest trends right now is backyard chickens and DIY chicken coops.
And we are right there with you!
Two weeks ago we got 4 baby chicks (SO CUTE!!) and a small chicken coop kit. Our coop kit is fine for 4 backyard chickens but we want to give them more space. We aren’t sure exactly what we want to build so we got this small coop that will later serve as a quarantine coop and a temporary coop for new baby chicks being introduced to our flock.

Today I am sharing my latest research with you. My favorite DIY chicken coops that have FREE plans provided!
Ana White Chicken Coops
Shed Style Chicken Coop
Ana White is a wonderful source for free building plans. And they have several chicken coops that I like. This shed style chicken coop is great for backyards and they provide a lot of money-saving tips.
The building plans for the run can be found here.
A-Frame Tractor Chicken Coop
This A-frame chicken coop is a great option if you want to move your coop around the backyard to allow your chickens to forage in different areas. This size is perfect for 3-4 chickens.
The Tangled Nest’s Chicken Coop
I think this chicken coop designed by The Tangled Nest is my favorite coop design. We are going to try to build this attached to our large storage shed.
I appreciate that it has a predator-proof area under the coop – we need this in our area of TN!
The Palace Chicken Coop from BackyardChickens
This palace chicken coop from backyardchicken.com is another option for us as well. Even though they do not have a large run connected to the coop it would be very easy to add a run later or during the building phase.
Wichita Cabin Chicken Coop
The Wichita Cabin Coop is a chicken coop that has proven to be able to stand the test of time. It is 10 years old and the owners are still using it!
The CPTBahamas Chicken Coop on BackyardChicken.com
The CPTBahamas Chicken Coop is another coop that would be great for our backyard setup. Also another option that can easily have an enclosed chicken run added on to it down the road.
Hopefully this helps in your chicken coop search!
Happy Easter!
